The home of my favored team

I was pleased when I landed on the idea for this puzzle last winter. Over the next four to five months, I floated the theme set to three different outlets, all of which had run something similar fairly recently. This happens to me a lot. Into a folder it went.

But October has arrived. Among the many reasons this is one of my favorite times of year: the baseball playoffs are underway. We’re still only in the wild card round, but have already seen some tight, beautifully pitched games. Inspired, I retrieved the puzzle from its folder.

      Give it another go, Ralph. Fill in what you can, then work on some of the crosses. You can do it!

    I’m about to go into my seasonal depression, but it has nothing to do with the lack of sunlight – it’s the long three months after the end of the World Series until spring training starts. This was a fun, clean puzzle with good non-theme baseball refererences (11D, 14A, 54A, 61A). As a Nats fan, I’d’ve clued 31D as “Winning a World Series some time in the next decade, for a Nats fan.” I don’t care strongly about this year’s playoffs, as long as the Dodgers, Yankees, and Phillies all lose.

    I totally get the seasonal depression thing. “Only 100+ days until pitchers and catchers…!” is an annual mantra. When I pulled this puzzle out of its on-line folder and looked at how I’d clued things, I realized I had an opportunity to change some clues to those non-theme baseball references you mention. Given where we are in the calendar, it was fun to add some more baseball to the mix. As always, thanks for solving.
