This is another of my early themed grids. It was rejected by five different outlets because they’d run similarly themed puzzles in the near or not-too-distant past.
For presentation here, I’ve changed the central theme answer (15-Down), resulting in new fill in large swaths of the grid. Crossword purists would probably say it has too many 3-letter words (27) – and I don’t necessarily disagree – but it is what it is.

There are a lot of 3s, but they don’t detract from the solving experience. Loved seeing Anthony Doerr crossing the Orioles. One of my favorite books and an exciting team, even if they’re having a tough year.
After realizing the downsides of lots of 3s – too many abbreviations, too many ‘1 cent’ (or is it 3 cent?!) words – I’ve been trying to aim for 10 at the most. I, too, loved the Doerr book, but was disappointed in the Netflix adaptation. (There’s probably a corollary to “Never meet your heroes”, and that’s “Never watch a film adaptation of a book you loved”). I’ve seen the Orioles referred to by more than one sportswriter as this season’s most disappointing team. So many talented young position players: Henderson, Holliday, Rutschman…now they need to beef up their starting pitching.
Love your work. Agree with observation that if you love a book, don’t see the movie.
