A 16 x 15, 79-word themed grid.

I initially came up with two of the theme answers (20- and 39-Across) and was contemplating an unconventional size (16 x something), then 60-Across popped into my head and I opted for a more conventional grid.

The title serves as the revealer here. It’s not perfect – I confess I even tried out ChatGPT for some suggestions (not helpful!) – so if you think of something more apt, let me know.

I always learn new things when constructing puzzles, particularly during the clueing process; that was especially true here.

    I actually think the title is perfect (I also like all three theme answers, as well as 6D). I didn’t realize 40D got their name from a Monty Python skit, which is a perfect excuse for me to go back and watch it, not that any excuse is needed. Great clue for 1A. Also good to see 63 Across. Finally, there’s a significant assumption underlying 52D, particularly these days!

      Thanks, Jeff! I had Toad The Wet Sprocket in frequent rotation in the early 90s and had somehow never known of their name’s origin. During construction of the grid, I’d landed on the fill for 63A, then couldn’t believe the *kismet* of one of Crossfire’s suggestions for 71A, which I of course accepted. Regarding your comment on 52D, I agree: have you read Jennifer Senior’s excellent piece in The Atlantic?
