This is a themed puzzle that was rejected by a couple of outlets for similar reasons. On the one hand, they said the theme felt too familiar; on the other, they felt the second ‘layer’ of theme would be a bit too obscure for many solvers.
I’ve always liked it, and now that I have my own site, I’m putting it out there.
