Well, Would You Look At That! (Themeless #1)

Here’s a 72-word themeless grid, the first themeless I’ve posted here; I hope to be sharing more. My seed was 36-Across, inspired by an excellent movie I watched not too long ago. The crossing at 20-Down was completely unplanned/delightfully fortuitous! Please let me know what you think.

I’ll be attending the ACPT in Stamford this coming weekend and hope I’m able to cross paths with anyone who’s solved and enjoyed any of my puzzles.

    Super smooth! The 36A/20D crossing is wonderful – I’ll take “fortuitous” any day. Fantastic clue on 38D. Glad to see 34A clued with the college, not the evil billionaire. I’d never heard of 39D, but the crosses were fair – or would have been if I hadn’t unthinkingly plunked STARS down at 45A. 36D is one of my favorite early Steely Dan songs, though I chuckle at how dated one of the lines is: “I tried to warn you about Chino and Daddy Gee /
    But I can’t seem to get to you through the US Mail”. By the way, what was the movie?

      Thank you, Jeff! I had several different versions of this puzzle in the works and I toggled back and forth between them, trying to maximize the quality of the fill. It wasn’t until I was clueing the final version that I realized I had that wonderful crossing at 36A/20D! Yes, I try to steer toward higher education with 34A and was happy to find the fun fact I used in the clue. 36D is one of my Steely Dan favorites as well. Here’s the movie; it’s a little gem.
